You must think yourself a pretty good driver.
―Michael Liberty ”
I am. I’m also very good with knives. And guns, too.
―Sarah Kerrigan

Kerrigan originally appears in StarCraft as a twenty-six year old female Terran psychic, trained as an expert espionage agent and assassin both physically and mentally. Initially the second-in-command of the Sons of Korhal, a revolutionary movement headed by Arcturus Mengsk against an oppressive Confederacy of Man, she is captured by the insectoid Zerg and infested, turning her into a human/Zerg hybrid completely under the control of the Zerg hive mind. She becomes one of their most powerful agents and eventually seeks dominance over the galaxy. In the strategy games, Kerrigan’s in-game unit changes to mimic her transformation. Kerrigan’s life before her infestation is further explored in the novels Uprising and Liberty’s Crusade while Queen of Blades elaborates on her infested character. As one of the major characters of the series, Kerrigan has been critically praised for her believability and character depth; she is ranked as one of the fifty greatest female video game characters ever by Tom’s Games.

Biography

Sarah Kerrigan was born with red hair and green eyes. Her pale skin would be supplanted by a tan over time. At eight years of age she scored highly on all phases of the psi-evaluations. Her latent powers were demonstrated during an incident on TarKossia where she accidentally killed her mother (causing her head to “come apart”) and damaged the brain of her father, Patrick. She was quickly taken in hand by Confederate agents and conscripted as a child into the Ghost Program.

During Ghost training, her most hated instructor was Lieutenant Rumm. Rumm attempted to break her sense of right and wrong and pursuade her to demonstrate her psionic powers to prove to his superiors that she was psychic. Kerrigan refused, unwilling to relive what happened to her parents.

To coerce her into using her powers Rumm injected a kitten with a tumor-causing chemical, then ordered Kerrigan to use her powers to destroy the tumor or euthanize the kitten. Still unsuccessful Rumm threatened to shoot the kitten himself. Kerrigan refused once again and Rumm decided not to shoot, leaving the kitten to die slowly and painfully. Rumm later discovered his pistol’s firing mechanism had been destroyed. However, the malfunction could be plausibly attributed to non-psionic factors, and so could not be treated as incontrovertible proof of her psionic powers.

A technician recommended the use of a neuro-adjuster, a device which would weaken a Ghost’s psionic powers and ensure their loyalty to the Confederacy. Rumm refused as a neuro-adjuster could kill the patient.

Sarah was taken to another room and strapped to a chair with a needle against her skin. In another room, she could see her brain-damaged father, similarly strapped to a chair. Rumm’s scientists were about to inject her father with the same substance that caused the growth of a tumor in the kitten unless Sarah cooperated with the Confederacy. Instead, Sarah said she would kill herself and her father rather than use the power for the Confederacy. She was injected with the needle and quickly lost consciousness. Rumm felt he had no choice now but to employ the neuro-adjuster.

The neural processing treatments left her a withdrawn and introverted young girl. Kerrigan would spend a year undergoing mental torture at the hands of Lieutenant Rumm.

cgGirls - Hibana

Hibana, a female counterpart to Shinobi’s Hotsuma. She is a government-employed ninja tasked with the elimination of members of the Nakatomi Corporation, which has unwittingly unleashed hellspawn upon futuristic Tokyo. Remember this?

“THE LOST VALLEY

Somewhere between the purple mountains, and the seas of the Seven Islands lies a hidden valley, a land that time has not touched.

All remained peaceful and tranquil, until darkness descended upon the land, light and freedom were banished from its homely hills, and the evil set seed.

Death and hunger spread, and all who remained within the walls of the village became stricken or hag ridden with haunted evil. All who had deserted the village sought refuge elsewhere. The village was now in complete control by darkness.

THE PLAGUES

The remaining people, weak and afflicted were unable to leave and soon became enveloped by the vicious evil force, transmuted by some terrible disease into the most hideously foul creatures. They wander their once peaceful village, producing deadly plagues, and fall fouls, to enslave anyone who dares trespass into the village, to try to defeat the evil overlord.

THE STORY TELLER

Many years had passed since the village became over-run, and soon the knowledge of the village slipped into legend.

Songs were sung and tales were told of brave adventurers who ventured into the valley to find and destroy the evil force and never to return, of the riches that could be gained from the successful adventure, and the evil which lay in wait for anyone who dared to set foot in the evil enchanted NIGHTSHADE village.

The old story teller’s eyes widen into fiery gems as he recalls and re-lives the tale of battle with the force of evil at work in the NIGHTSHADE village.

“Tales of ghosts and mad monks enslaved by evil forces to do their bidding and of plagues and foul demons let loose on the village. Even death itself was imprisoned within the village of NIGHTSHADE as an un-invited guest of the evil one.”

The old man continues:

“Skeletons with rotting flesh dripping with the blood of the long dead, waiting, prowling the now empty village for live prey.”

“Hideous demons” he croaks, ” and terrible ailments and spells waiting to absorb any who dares anger the evil force.”

“Lift the darkness and the Kingdom of NIGHTSHADE shall be yours forever!”

The old man slumps back exhausted into the tall carved wooden chair. You extract as much information as you possibly can from him, but he can tell you little more than where to find the village. You set off down the valley and enter the forbidden NIGHTSHADE village.

FARE THEE WELL”

cgGirls - Blood Rayne

Rayne is a Dhampir who is looking for her father, and killing any vampires that cross her path. She is now working for the Brimstone Society. Her friend and mentor, Mynce, also with Brimstone, introduces her to the ways of the Vampire. She helps her with her first mission, but is presumably killed during it.

*A Dhampir (also dhampire, dhamphir or dhampyr) in Balkan folklore and in vampire fiction is the child of a vampire father and a human mother, with vampire powers but none of the weaknesses. (in fiction, the reverse occurs as well). A dhampir is believed to have the unique ability to see vampires, even when they are invisible, and is unusually adept at killing them.

The game begins in 1932, in a place where it appears that the people believe in vampires, as all the doors and windows show crosses. It shows two people (male and female), running down a street. The woman trips, and the man pauses long enough to help her up, only to be dragged into a dark alleyway by a chain. His head is thrown from an alley at the women’s feet, with Rayne walking calmly up to the woman. The woman seemingly breaks down crying, but in fact only hides her face to reveal she is in fact a vampire. After a brief fight, Rayne decapitates her and then takes off before a small army of vampires tries to catch her off guard. She drops a grenade on their position as she leaves.

On top of the buildings, two mysterious men, who were watching the events unfold the whole time, are discussing their reason for being here. One reveals they are here to recruit Rayne, who is trying to find where her father is. The other member does not want a Dhampir with the Brimstone society, regardless of the fact that she is only half-vampire and has fewer weaknesses, as the Society is trying to rid the world of Vampires (and presumably people with Vampire blood in them). Eventually they agree to recruit Rayne, and leave a necklace with their symbol on it (as seen on the game cover).

When we last saw Rayne in 1935, she joined forces with the shadowy Brimstone Society to destroy a supernatural Nazi bid for dominance. Her father, Kagan, an influential Nazi collaborator, was killed in an accident at the close of the War. Cheated of killing Kagan herself, Rayne has spent the last sixty years ferreting out and destroying his many offspring, her siblings. They have banded together and formed the Cult of Kagan, pledging to carry on his legacy of creating a new era of vampire supremacy where humans are mere cattle for the bloodthirsty predators that hunt them. Rayne’s nefarious siblings have created “The Shroud”, a mysterious substance which, when released, renders the sun’s lethal rays harmless to vampires and twists nature into a nightmarish perversion. Now only Rayne stands between an unsuspecting humanity and a horrifying vampire dawn.
