Picture from Molyneux wants 5 Million Copies of Fable III off the shelves

Peter Molyneux has set a target of 5 million copies sold for Fable III. It is by no means a financial target but rather a statistical indicator that will show more people were attracted by the big changes that the game will offer.

We have already heard of some of the considerable shifts that title will be taking, disregarding the shackles of the traditional RPG. Molyneux is very eager for all players to experience every feature the game will have, clearly unhappy that few players got to experience what Fable II had to offer.

February NPDs: 360 Overtakes Wii, BioShock 2 Tops Software

The Wii doesn't often fall off its perch atop the console crowd, and when it does it's worth noting. The Wii slipped below the Xbox 360 this month, though the reasons aren't easy to identify. None of the consoles have seen price drops, so this seems more of a natural equalizing of the consoles than we've seen in months past. The last time the Wii slipped below another console was September of 2009, due to the PS3 price drop and launch of the Slim. The last time the 360 topped the Wii was September of 2007, during the Halo 3 launch. Now that the three are on par without any particular mitigating factors, we may see them swapping spots for a while.

Year-over-year sales were down, though the consoles saw moderate gains from January of this year. Still, all of the hardware manufacturers have reason to celebrate this month. The PlayStation 3 sales are up 30%, the 360 is on top of the console market, and Nintendo always has its trusty DS to sell like hotcakes.

February 2010 Hardware Sales

  • Nintendo DS -- 613,200
  • Xbox 360 -- 422,000
  • Wii -- 397,900
  • PlayStation 3 -- 360,100
  • PlayStation Portable -- 133,400
  • PlayStation 2 -- 101,900

News: Only two pairs of Moves and sub-controllers supported

Or four Move controllers on their own.

Sony has clarified that, although four of the Move wand controllers can be used at a time, the PS3 motion control system only supports two Move controllers and two of the offhand "sub-controllers" at once.

There's a cap of four controllers total, explained Justin Cooney, a senior account manager for developer support at Sony Computer Entertainment America, in a GDC session.

That includes the nunchuck-style wireless offhand controllers. "I always think of it as the left side of a Sixaxis," Cooney said,

News: Blizzard: 80% of effort for 20% of polish

So that's why they take so long.

Blizzard senior engineer Dominic Fillion revealed the extent of the developer's perfectionism at GDC today. During a presentation on programming StarCraft II, he quipped that the vast majority of the developer's effort goes into the final polishing stages of the game.

"They say that the last 20 per cent of your effort gets you 80 per cent of your game," Fillion said, quoting the the common game development maxim.

"With us it seems to be the other way around. 80 per cent of our effort goes into the final 20 per cent of polish."

PS3 Motion Controller detailed

Yesterday (March 10) Sony was on the stage at GDC, there were some small announcements such as Modnation Racers will be coming out this spring, but that’s pretty much it.

The big thing about this conference was the new Sony motion controller for the Playstation 3, the product has been officially named, and its called “Playstation Move”.  Move lets the players enjoy tons of games ranging from simple family/party games to games like Socom 4 and Resident Evil 5, the new device (if you didn’t know) is pretty much the Wii Mote on steroids, this tech combines both the Motion Controller and the Playstation Eye to create amazing accuracy and precision like never before seen, and from the footage that we got to see, it definitely fits that category.

We got to see a handful of new games that will use “Move” :

  • Sports Champions – A game very similar to Wii Sports, the game features many games inside of it, first was Gladiator which looks amazing in my opinion, if you saw E3 last year, Sony demoed a stick figure with a sword and a shield, this game is exactly what it is. the second game is Table Tennis which might sound just like the game on Wii Play, except this one actually looks like your the one swinging, different angles, speed, positions, and it looks very accurate as promised.  The 3rd game is Archery which is, exactly what is sounds like, again very accurate! and the fourth game showed in Sports Champions is Golf.
  • MoveParty – A Family\Party game that features some stuff for pretty much the casual gamers, painting, hitting stuff, all in all just stuff for the more younger and casual audience.
  • Motion Fighters – Perhaps the most interesting new game that will use “Move”, again very similar to the Boxing game in Wii Sports, except it features realistic graphics and physics, along with the accuracy and precision that is in the controller, from my standpoint it really does look like 1:1 precision, and again, it looks awesome!

Table Tennis

Some already released games that will use “Move” are Eyepet, Little Big Planet, Resident Evil 5, and in the future Socom 4, now you might wonder how you walk or move your characters in games like Socom, Sony also announced that with the Controller will also be included a separate nunchuck sort of device called the “Sub-Controller”, it features the analog stick so you can move your character, and yes it is also wireless.  Just so it’ll be clear, you can still use 2 motion controller at the same time just like they showed at E3, for example in the Fighting game and the Gladiator game, they used two controllers, look very promising!

Motion Controller + Sub-Controller

Sony also mentioned that “Playstation Move” will launch with 20 games, and that it will support 36 publishers as of now.

Last but not least is the price, Sony announced that “Playstation Move” will cost less than $100, at first it may sound a bit high but given the fact that it includes both the controllers, PSeye, and a game, it seems like a reasonable price to me. But that’s not all, there will be 3 different types of ways to get “Move”:

  1. If you already own the Playstation Eye, you will be able to buy the motion controller separately
  2. Getting the bundle it self, meaning PSeye, Controller, and a game.
  3. The ultimate bundle which is for the new comers, it will include a PS3 system, and every thing mentioned above

That’s all we know so far, Sony chose to dedicate GDC to their new “Playstation Move” and they did a great job, “Move” is set to be released later on this year.

EA Seemingly Drops Dragon Age 2 Release Date

Dragon Age placard

EA and BioWare are supporting the Dragon Age franchise with ambitious downloadable content plans and even an expansion. On top of that, we may have just discovered the release date for the upcoming sequel. Retail copies of Dragon Age: Origins Awakening arrived at the 1UP offices today, and included in the box was a placard with an intriguing hint (above). The iconic bloody dragon accompanies the date, February 1, 2011.

As far as release dates go, this one is being dropped much sooner than most, as well as in an unconventional manner. But February 1 falls on a Tuesday next year, the traditional game release day, and an EA conference call already revealed the Dragon Age sequel would be hitting between January and March of 2011. While we'll have to wait for word from EA and BioWare to call it official, this fits comfortably in that range, and so it seems likely as the date for the sequel. Mark your calendars, Dragon Age fans.
